It’s good to be queen…at a Halloween Tea Party!

Sunday I traveled down a rabbit hole and found myself at a Halloween tea…at Tea’s Me, a charming Tea Shop in Hillsboro, Oregon.  Several friends and I decided to dress as a group and we chose Alice In Wonderland as our theme.  Much merriness ensued!

Teri dressed up as the Queen of Hearts…complete with a red heart necklace and a teapot purse!  Every detail was perfect…check out her fabulous stockings!

Sheila was the White Rabbit….she had a blue velvet waistcoat, a large pocket watch on a chain..and even gold-rimmed glasses!

Ron was the Mad Hatter….his outfit was incredibly detailed….with hatpins and a spool sash…and huge eyebrows that wiggled up and down.  He even dyed his mustache!  He won first place at the party….

Christopher was the most darling Alice ever…..he was Alice after she’s drank the growing potion….and he had stickers to put on his pot of tea that said “drink me”!  He looked amazing…and won second place in the contest!

As for me…I chose to be the White Queen.  I dressed all in white…with pearls and satin gloves and silver sequin shoes.

It was an incredibly fun day…and the tea itself was delicious!  After the party we decided to walk as a group through Washington Square Mall ….we were stopped dozens of times for photos and had fun waving to all the kids.  I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t end up on Youtube!

It’s all about the Focal Point

Every summer I go on the hunt for just the right item to be our focal point in our Halloween display.  It’s all about the focal point, in my opinion, and in the past we have had some spectacular items….like a black vintage typewriter and another year a black, gray and white doll house.  With two weeks to go I still hadn’t found the right thing this year…until I was at a church flea market and found this vintage Singer sewing machine.  It was under a table and filthy and I almost missed it.  It cleaned up nicely and is the perfect backdrop for Lori Mitchell trick-or-treaters!

So you can imagine my excitement when one week later I found a SECOND focal point..this gorgeous vintage birdbath!  Fill it with shredded paper and a couple of darling Nicol Sayre figures and it’s fabulous!  Two focal points….makes the shop twice as cute!  Stop in and see!

Musical Dont’s for the Sunday School-1897

Singing contest in Fanling Public School back ...

Musical Dont’s for the Sunday School

1. Don’t sing too loud.

2. Don’t sing through your nose.

3. Don’t sing through your teeth.

4. Don’t keep time with your feet.

5. Don’t imagine that noise is music.

6. Don’t bend your book open backwards.

7. Don’t be afraid to open your mouth wide.

8. Don’t forget that singing is praising God.

9. Don’t try to sing louder than everybody else.

10. Don’t look all around the room while singing.

11. Don’t sing the words simply–sing their meaning.

12. Don’t crowd nor drag the time.  Follow the leader.

13. Don’t hold on to the last tone after everybody else stops.

14. Don’t mix up singing with whispering, or anything else.

15. Don’t lose time in finding the place after it is announced.

16. Don’t throw your singing book on the floor.  Be kind to it.

17. Don’t fail to sing with all your soul and a good round voice.

18. Don’t forget that it is just as bad to sing a lie as to speak it.

19. Don’t look to see whether others are singing.  Sing yourself.

20. Don’t keep your eyes riveted on the book.  Watch the leader.

21. Don’t forget to sing with the spirit and the understanding also.

22. Don’t stop or begin to sing in the middle of a sentence or stanza.

23. Don’t “dog-ear” or deface the singing book.  It can’t defend itself.

24. Don’t try to sing praises to God with gum in your mouth, much less tobacco.

25. Don’t stick up your nose and refuse to sing because you don’t like the piece.

26. Don’t try to make everybody else think that you are the best singer in the school.

27. Don’t forget that real music comes from the heart and not simply from the lips.

28. Don’t forget to look happy when you sing.  Sweet words and a sour face do not mix well.

29. Don’t sing pieces simply because they are pretty, but for the appropriateness of the words.

30. Don’t fail to make the words sung the sentiment of your heart while singing.  It is mockery to sing praises with the mouth while the heart is far away.

Written expressly for The Seed Sower, 1897

I found this inside the front cover of an old hymn book called the Seed Sower…..I thought it was charming and many of the sentiments are so appropriate today for our everyday lives.  After all, sweet words and a sour face do NOT mix well!

Flirtation

Portland Vase, about 1790, Josiah Wedgwood and...

Flirtation

After all, there’s no need

to say anything

at first.  An orange, peeled

and quartered, flares

like a tulip on a Wedgwood plate.

Anything can happen.

Outside the sun

has rolled up her rugs

and night strewn salt

across the sky.  My heart

is humming a tune

I haven’t heard in years!

Quiet’s cool flesh—

let’s sniff and eat it.

There are ways to make of the moment

a topiary

so the pleasure’s in

walking through.

look you, I am bursting with joy

IMMORAL

I keep walking around myself, mouth open with amazement:

For by all the ethical rules of life, I ought to be solemn and sad,

But, look you, I am bursting with joy.

I scold myself:

I say: Boy, your work has gone to pot:

You have scarcely enough money to last out the week:

And think of your responsibilities!

Whereupon, my heart bubbles over,

I puff on my pipe, and think how solemnly the world goes by my window,

And how childish people are, wrinkling their foreheads over groceries and rent.

For here jets life fresh and stinging in the vivid air:

The winds laugh to the jovial Earth:

The day is keen with Autumn’s fine flavor of having done the year’s work:

Earth, in her festival, calls her children to the crimson revels.

The trees are a drunken riot: the sunshine is dazzling…

Yes, I ought, I suppose, to be saddened and tragic:

But Joy drops from me like ripe apples.

Farewell Beloved Penelope

My wonderful quirky calico cat Penelope died this morning, at the age of eleven.  She was my loving companion ever since she adopted me as a kitten at Christmas time and started living under my front porch.  She chose ME…and it was one of her amusing and heart-warming quirks that she was a one-woman cat her whole life….she hid from almost every visitor, barely tolerated my ex (of course the fact that he teased her in a cruel manner didn’t help) and wrapped her whole life around her beloved mama, acting like she was my baby….even wanting to be held like one.  She slept on my bed every night…followed me from room to room….and gave me many MANY kisses, especially on my nose, which for her own reasons, was her favorite.

This last year for her was the best year of her life…she was a very happy little cat, with no stress in the household and had only Coco around to compete with for my attention.  She had a special fondness for large rubber bands and chenille pipe cleaners…even sleeping with them.  I named my shop after her…I have always had a special place in my heart for wonderful little shops with cats in them, and while having Penelope in the shop would have been a disaster (since she had a curious nature and loved to climb as high as she could go), she was there in spirit and many customers asked about her on a regular basis.

It was a special blessing to have such intense undiluted love from such a loving creature…I feel very grateful to have had her in my life.  Farewell, my sweet Penelope…..I will miss you terribly.
